Why Trader Joes Isn't Converting To Curbside Pickup Or Grocery Delivery

Ready for a cliche? "We are in some crazy times." I know everyone's been saying that for weeks now but it's true. I've been trying things that I've never done before, like curbside grocery pickup. It was pretty easy although I did miss going through the aisles to pick up a bunch of random crap that I don't need.

Most major grocery store chains have started to offer curbside and grocery delivery as they are limited to the amount of people that can come into the stores. But Trader Joes has stayed away from it. A lot of avid shoppers have wondered why?

I go to the Trader Joes in Towson and I've waited in line for upwards of 40 minutes to get in and get my groceries. It is what it is, but it's also not super convenient. I'd love if I could order things earlier and then go pick them up.

Coronavirus Pandemic Causes Climate Of Anxiety And Changing Routines In America

Trader Joe's vice president of marketing, Matt Sloan says they are not going to make that change. The reason? Well, it's pretty simple. Sloan says the company would rather invest in its employees.

On the company's podcast, "Inside Trader Joe's," Sloan says that creating an online shopping system for curbside pickup is a massive undertaking. He said it takes months of planning and a lot of money too. According to Sloan the company has opted to invest those resources into their employees rather than on an infrastructure that eliminates the need for people.

The company's marketing director, Tara Miller, says "The bottom line here is that our people remain our most valued resource. While other retailers were cutting staff and adding things like self-checkout, curbside pickup and outsourcing delivery options, we were hiring more crew, and we continue to do that."

Honestly, I would love to have the opportunity to pre-order things from TJ's, but I respect their decision to keep people employed. I'll continue to shop there knowing their model supports people instead of machines.
