Rough Winter Conditions Taking a Toll on Lake Shore Drive

Winter is still over a month away, but Mother Nature says it's in full swing! And this head start on winter weather is going to have some brutal effects on the lakefront.

Over the summer Lake Michigan experienced record high water levels. Alderman Brian Hopkins warned about the threats posed by high lake levels at the time. Now, Hopkins says we should all be prepared for a rough winter on Lake Shore Drive. Lake Shore Drive was closed on Monday when lake water was pooling in the streets.

The main concern heading into winter is erosion from the freeze-thaw cycle, and Chicagoans should expect more frequent closures as winter approaches.
