Sanfilippo syndrome is a heart-wrenching, horrific disease that affects 1/100,000 live births. The disease has been dubbed "childhood alzheimer's" for the similarities in symptoms.
Children with Sanfilippo syndrome usually start to show the symptoms between the age of 2 to 6. Eight-year-old Keira Esposito has Sanfilippo syndrome, and was diagnosed back in 2015.
After the age of 10, most patients start to experience severe symptoms like loss of motor and cognitive skills, and most will then enter vegetative state, eventually leading to death before the age of 20.
Keira's parents say she's "our entire world" and "the biggest blessing we've ever had."
