Some teens accused of a prank that turned deadly have been charged with murder.
Four teenagers from Toledo have been accused of throwing a sandbag onto a car on I-75. Lucas County prosecutors upgraded felonious assault charges against the teens yesterday to murder after the death of Marquise Byrd. He was just 22-years-old.
Authorities say the boys threw the sandbag from the Indiana Avenue overpass last week. The bag struck the car Byrd was a front-seat-passenger in. Byrd was severely injured, and later died.
Lillian Diallo, an attorney for Byrd's family, said in a statement that Byrd was "a nice, gentle young man who always had a smile on his face. And he wasn’t mean-spirited; he was so loving," the statement said. "He’s leaving a son, who will be three in the upcoming year. He has a mother and a brother and a host of other family members that are trying to make sense of this tragedy.”
The teens, all between 13 and 14 years old, were seen leaving the overpass after the bag got tossed. They're also facing additional charges for damage caused to other vehicles. The boys are being held without bail in a juvenile facility.
