Tips To Stop Stress Before It Takes Over

Tired of feeling stressed out? Over the last year, people’s stress levels have been pushed to their limits and that can do a number on your body. In the short-term, it can give you headaches and upset stomachs, zap your energy and mess with your sleep, which makes you even crankier. And when stress becomes chronic, it can affect how well your body can fight infection.

But there are steps we can take to get stress under control. These tips from experts can help stop stress from taking over and may even prevent it from happening in the first place.

  • Develop a positive mindset- Being resilient is the key, according to psychologistMary Alvord. “Resilience is the ability to deal with stress,” she explains, “and people can develop protective factors to increase it.” A big part of being resilient is feeling like you’re not powerless when faced with challenges, even big ones, like living through a pandemic.
  • Find ways to combine friends and fitness- Research has shown that social support helps us live longer and staying connected also helps us cope with stress. Being active is also important to our mental and physical health andDr. Ellen Epstein, an allergist-immunologist, recommends regularly socializing and working out to combat stress. She advises meeting up with friends to exercise often and if you can’t meet up in person, doing it online.
  • Prioritize self-care- Forget indulgences like a day at the spa, we’re talking basics, like getting a good night’s sleep, drinking plenty of water and relaxing muscles to help with being resilient against stress.Dr. Brian A. Smart, an immunology specialist, explains that people who don’t sleep well have much higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol and he adds, “If you’re chronically dehydrated, it’s another source of stress on the body since cortisol levels may be higher as a result.”
