If you pay attention to what the royals are wearing, youâve probably noticed that you rarely see the women carrying anything other than a clutch. With sky-high fashion budgets, why arenât they carrying any kind of bag they want? Turns out, there are a couple important reasons that clutch is key.
First, the small hand-held bag makes the perfect cleavage cover. Princess Dianaâs handbag designer Anya Hindmarch famously referred to her clutches as âcleavage bagsâ because Di would hold the little satin purse over her chest when she was stepping out of cars.
The second reason also makes a lot of sense. Royal women carry clutches to help them avoid shaking a million hands at every engagement they attend. You can often see Kate Middleton holding a clutch, and apparently, they never get set down.
âShe can place it in one hand to have the other free, Myka Meier, founder of Beaumont Etiquette explains about Kateâs clutch. âIt never gets tucked under an arm or placed on the ground or table.â
There is an exception to the clutch rule - Her Royal Highness the Queen herself. Sheâs often seen with her small handbag on her arm and she uses it to send messages to her entourage, like moving it to indicate sheâd like to wrap it up, politely, of course.
