While most people dream of owning their own home one day, there are still a lot of foks who are simply renters, and depending on where you live that monthly rent check can cost you a pretty penny, and in some areas that amount is rising fast. 

Well, Bankrate.com analyzed data from Zillow on median rental prices over the last year to determine the cities where rent has increased the most, which could be useful information if you are planning a move in the near future.

Overall, Marina Del Rey, California has seen the largest increase in rent over the last year, with an increase of $441.50, followed by Medford, Massachusetts where rents went up $405.

  2. Medford, MA: +$405
  3. Jersey City, NJ: +$285
  4. Columbia, MD: +$277
  5. Corona, CA: +$273.50 

On the flipside, there are some areas of the country where rents are actually going down, although once everyone starts flocking there for the cheap rents that may change. The largest decrease in rent is in Bronxville, New York, where rents have decreased as much as $475, with Buffalo, New York a distant second with decreases of $355.
