High School Replacing Homecoming Royalty With Excellence Award

A Michigan high school is doing away with a time-honored tradition. They no longer want to elect a homecoming queen.

Just in time for the new school year, the student council board of Chelsea High School (CHS) has decided to no longer crown a homecoming queen due to recent bullying issues. The student council president Drew Vanderspool told news outlets that they don't want one of the biggest awards at their school to be associated with 'pretty' or 'popular' stereotypes or even be limited to a specific category of students.

In place of this old tradition, the students will now vote on someone of any gender in each grade to be presented with an excellence award and a medal at the homecoming football game. The new award will celebrate academic, social and emotional attributes.
