Dorchester Vietnam Veterans Memorial Vandalized

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Vandals yanked up plants, flowers, and flags from the ground at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Boston on the eve of Memorial Day Weekend.

State Police said the memorial on Morrissey Boulevard some time Thursday afternoon.

Memorial administrator Joe Zink said he and his wife were there until 1 p.m. placing 100 flags ahead of the weekend holiday. The vandal struck after they left.

Zink said crews had just finished $20,000 in repairs and re-landscaping since a vandal struck only seven months ago.

"For somebody to come and do this, they have to be a very angry, deranged, violent person to do it," Zink told WBZ-TV. "I don't think any of us can really put our heads in that position, to do something like that to this site."

Photos show swastikas spraypainted on the stone memorial, which is on land owned by the University of Massachusetts in Dorchester.

State and local police are investigating.
