TEWKSBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Despite overwhelming support, there's an effort underway in Tewksbury to repeal a plastic bag ban that only just went into effect this month.
That effort is led by Joe Dunn, who believes businesses and shoppers should have a choice of what kind of bag they want to use.
He opposed the matter when it was first put before voters in October, and told WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas he still opposes it now.
"My article will simply allow people to exercise their choice, allow businesses to do as they'd like to do without the town interfering," he said. "The fact of the matter is, the old-style bags can be disposed of properly."
But the majority of people who spoke to Rojas at a local grocery store didn't agree with Dunn.
"I think they should let it stand as it is," said one shopper.
"Adjusting to it, everybody will be fine in the end," said another.
"I think it's a great idea," said another. "I think it's really sad that people want to repeal it."
A few did say they miss using plastic bags, and would vote to repeal the ban.
Town Manager Richard Montuori said that, aside from a small group, they haven't had major issues with stores or customers.
"We're hoping that the repeal does not pass, and we can continue moving forward," he said.
The bag ban went into effect on April 2 after a 137-78 vote in favor.
The vote to repeal it will take place on May 6 at the next Town Meeting.
