BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — After more than a decade of working together, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department said they are terminating their contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE is now trying to figure out where to put 150 to 200 immigrant detainees.

Sheriff Steve Tomkins said terminating the contract is not politically motivated. He said he needs to free up space, taken up by ICE detainees, as he plans to transition more than 200 female inmates into a rehabilitation program.

ICE Field Office Deputy Director Todd Lyons told WBZ NewsRadio’s Dan Rea that the move is disappointing, especially because no notice was given.

“Being a good law enforcement partner isn’t sending someone a two-sentence letter with no notice,” Lyons said.
