GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Residents on the North Shore are celebrating Indie Bookstore Day by following the North of Boston Book Trail and collecting stamps and a passport book for visiting any of the 20 stores on the list.
The Bookstore of Gloucester was buzzing Saturday as people scoured the shelves looking for their next page turner or beach book. Nicole Dahlmer, the manager, says Indie Bookstore Day is the kickoff to their spring and summer season.
"It's kind of a really busy holiday season, a slow winter, and then we are off to the races, Indie Bookstore Day. It's super busy. It's nice to have a lot of different people come in. We have a lot of locals, and we have a lot of people that visit for the first time," she said.
Dahlmer also explained that shopping local provides a more personalized experience, especially for those who have been shopping at the store since it opened.

"We have customers that have been coming here for all 51 years that we've been here, and so we know their reading habits," Dahlmer said. "If we have books come in ahead of time that we know that they're gonna like, we call people to let them know."
Julie, a local author about to release the latest installment in her book series, said she enjoyed following the trail while also getting a chance to talk about her new novel.
"I got to sign all of their stock that they had in the stores, which was fun, and meet the booksellers, and also do some shopping."
The North of Boston Book Trail Passport Challenge ends on Sunday.
