More Than 108,000 Coronavirus Cases Reported In Massachusetts

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has reported another 233 cases of COVID-19, bringing the state's total case count to 108,070.

The state DPH has also attributed an additional 50 deaths to the coronavirus, upping the COVID-death toll in Massachusetts to 8,013.

According to the data released on Friday, Middlesex County has reported nearly 23,800 coronavirus cases, Suffolk County has reported more than 19,700 cases, Essex County has reported close to 16,000 cases, and Worcester County has reported around 12,200 cases. All other Massachusetts counties have reported less than 10,000 cases each.

The number of hospitals using surge capacity in Massachusetts has dropped 90 percent over the past month. There are currently a total of 791 individuals hospitalized for COVID-19 in the Commonwealth.

While many important COVID-19 health metrics are on the decline in Massachusetts, several states have been reporting increases numbers of cases over the past week. That includes Arizona, North Carolina, Texas, and Florida which reported a new single-day high of nearly 9,000 new cases on Friday.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed more than 2.37 million COVID-19 cases and nearly 122,000 deaths since March.

On Thursday, Robert Redfield, the Director of the CDC, said the number of U.S. residents who have been infected with the coronavirus is probably 10 times higher than the official CDC count.

"Our best estimate right now is that for every case that's reported, there actually are 10 other infections," Redfield said.
