MBTA Employees Have Temperature Taken Before Shifts

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority employees are having their temperatures taken before the start of their shifts, a new measure implemented by the agency on Wednesday in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout Boston's public transport system.

General manager of the MBTA Steven Poftak made the announcement to employees in a letter sent Tuesday night, after a total of 18 MBTA employees had tested positive for coronavirus.

The temperature-testing sites are currently set up at Cabot Garage in South Boston, one of the T's largest facilities. Bus drivers are being tested at screening areas on a bus, in an effort to “ensure privacy for our employees and the medical staff.” The protocol is set to expand to the Charlestown Garage soon.

Poftak said any MBTA employee with a temperature of over 100 degrees will be sent home, told to notify their manager, and to call a doctor.
