Massachusetts Residents Offer Reminder On Snow Shoveling Etiquette

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A historic blizzard hit Massachusetts Monday, dumping copious amounts of snow across much of the state.

As residents dig themselves out, there are certain faux pas that shovelers may want to keep in mind, according to people who spoke with WBZ NewsRadio Tuesday

Number one on the list is clearing the snow and ice off your car before driving.

"I got a teenager out there driving, I make her clean that whole car off," said Karen. "These snow rakes are easy enough to buy."

Not only is having your car resemble Frosty the Snowman a hazard to other drivers, you can also face a fine of up to $200 in Massachusetts if you get pulled over.

Another big rule is not shoveling snow back onto the street and sidewalk after they have been cleared.

"Don't push it out onto the road and have the plows push it into your neighbor's driveway, that's not a cool move," one man said.

Other etiquette reminders include being considerate of older neighbors, remembering to shovel the sidewalks in front of your home, and just simple common courtesy.

"You don’t got to just juggle your half of it, you can shovel the other half if you’ve got the energy," Karen said. "Even if we helped each other, it gets a lot easier. Many hands makes little work. I sound like my mother."

WBZ's Chaiel Schaffel reports.
