Mass. State Trooper Shot During Traffic Stop In Hyannis

HYANNIS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts State Police are searching for a suspect vehicle after a police officer was shot during a traffic stop in Barnstable Friday night.

According to MSP, a Trooper assigned to the State Police-Yarmouth Barracks was shot after stopping a vehicle on Camp Street shortly after 11:30 p.m. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene.

Authorities are still trying to locate the occupant or occupants of the vehicle.

The Trooper, who sustained non-life threatening injuries, was transported by another Trooper to Cape Cod Hospital, and from there was taken by ambulance to a Boston-area hospital.

UPDATE 3:55 p.m.: MSP said the Trooper remains at Massachusetts General Hospital. The investigation into the identity of the suspect or suspects who shot him is ongoing. The Trooper, who is 28, suffered a serious gunshot wound to his right hand. The round went through his hand and then appears to have struck his ballistic vest in his shoulder area.
