BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Out of more than 3,000 U.S. counties, Middlesex County in Massachusetts is number 12 in the nation for both the number of confirmed Coronavirus cases and deaths.
On Sunday, Johns Hopkins Resource Center, which tracks data surrounding the global spread of COVID-19, said Middlesex County had 18,883 confirmed cases and 1,370 coronavirus-related deaths since the pandemic began in March.
That puts Middlesex County in the top one percent of hardest hit counties in the nation.
According to the state Department of Public Health, Middlesex County includes several of the towns and cities experiencing higher rates of COVID-19 than the state average, like Everett, Stoneham, Lowell, Tewksbury, Framingham, and Shirley.
Several other counties in Massachusetts were in Johns Hopkins' top 50 lists for COVID-19 cases and deaths in the U.S.
Suffolk County, which includes the hardest hit city of Chelsea, was 15th in the nation for confirmed case numbers, and 23rd in the nation for deaths.
With more than 16,000 cases and nearly 800 deaths, Essex County is 24th in the nation for both case numbers and deaths.
When it comes to confirmed case numbers, Worcester County is 30th and Norfolk County is 37th in the nation.
