LYNNFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Girl Scouts of Lynnfield, Massachusetts said they are having a hard time finding an affordable location for its troop meetings.
They have been using a classroom at Lynnfield High School for free, but the school committee is now imposing a fee, $30 per scout annually, for the meetings.
The town said that is the cost it charges other youth groups to meet at the school.
But scout leaders say that fee is too much, totaling about $600 a year, so they are asking the district for an exemption. “Our scouts earn almost $1 a box of girl scout cookies sold,” said Danielle Dulchinos of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. To afford the cost of the meetings, “Our scouts would have to work on selling more than 700 additional boxes of cookies,” she said.
Dulchinos added that the girl scouts and its volunteers are local and for years have relied on partnerships within the local community, such as with school districts and community groups, to help find affordable and safe meeting locations.
