Head Of The Charles Brings 11,000 Athletes To Boston Area

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The 55th annual Head of the Charles Regatta drew 11,000 athletes from across the globe to Boston and Cambridge this weekend.

The race is on a 3 mile, upstream course on the Charles River. It began at the Boston University DeWolfe Boathouse and ended at the Eliot Bridge.

May Sweeney and her team, from Mount Saint Joseph Academy — outside of Philadelphia — are competing on Sunday in the Women's Youth Eights category.

"This is one of the biggest races for us in our season. We work really hard just for this. The past couple years, we've only had one boat. But this year, we won the bid for a second boat," Sweeney said. "It's just such an honor to be here competing with the best boats in the nation."

Over the weekend, hundreds of thousands of spectators will line the bridges and banks of the Charles River to cheer on the racers.
