Former Economic Development Chief John Barros Running For Mayor

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – Longtime city economic development chief John Barros is joining the Boston mayoral race. Barros was born in Boston and is the son of Cape Verdean immigrants.

He had been Boston’s economic development chief for seven years, and before that ran the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative for 13 years and is a former Boston School Committee member.

Barros made the announcement from Dorchester. “Boston is ready for a Black man who is a son of Boston, who was born and raised here, who worked his entire life to help communities around him,” he said during the announcement. He also released a video announcing the run on Twitter.

Barros joins four other mayoral candidates: City Councilors Michelle Wu, Anissa Essaibi George and Andrea Campbell, former hotel manager Dana Depelteau, and State Rep. Jon Santiago.

Barros ran for mayor in 2013 but was eliminated from the race before the general election.
