BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A former Brigham and Women's rheumatologist has been indicted on more than 80 new charges of sexually assaulting patients, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced Tuesday.

Derrick Todd faces 81 charges total in Suffolk County Superior Court: 21 counts of rape, 59 counts of indecent assault and battery, and one count of assault with intent to rape.

According to the Suffolk County DA's Office, the alleged crimes happened between 2017 and 2023 at Brigham and Women's Hale Building and Faulkner Hospital in Boston. There are 22 alleged victims, all of whom are women. They range in age from 17 to 56.

Hayden said the scope of the allegations was something Suffolk County had "never encountered."

"This is an extraordinary set of indictments," Hayden said. "Not just for the sheer volume of charges and number of women assaulted, but for the fact that all these women were violated by one person. A medical person. A medical professional. The one person they entrusted to help them in their time of need."

In a statement, a spokesperson for Mass General Brigham said the hospital system is "deeply distressed to learn the depth and breadth of the harm reflected" in the new indictments and that it recognizes the "incredible courage" of patients who came forward.

"We first reported Dr. Todd to law enforcement during our investigation, following the receipt of anonymous complaints, and we continued to work closely with them throughout their investigation," the statement read. "We also reached out to patients who were seen by Dr. Todd and offered extensive support for follow-up medical care, as well as assistance if they wanted to report their experience to law enforcement."

Hayden said Todd could be arraigned in Suffolk County Superior Court as soon as this week.

Before his indictments in Suffolk County, Todd had already pleaded not guilty to similar charges in Middlesex County. He is also a defendant in a class action lawsuit in which he is accused of sexually assaulting more than 200 patients.
