BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It turns out holding your phone all day could lead to a handful of problems.

Thankfully, Occupational Therapist Kelly Belinsky, the senior hand therapist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, has some tips for avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome from phone use.

She said that cramped, tired feeling in the hand you hold your phone with is much more common than you think.

"There's definitely more of an increase in overuse syndrome," she told WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas. "Their hands aren't getting a break during the day."

Belinsky said the best thing to do is to take a break from your phone and laptop every 20 minutes, and don't forget to stretch.

"Opening up the hand so that the fingers are straight and the thumb is out to the side, and then bringing the hand down to the side with the elbow straight and the palm facing forward—that will open up kind of the palm side of the hand," Belinsky said.

Belinsky also recommends talking to your primary care physician if you think you may have, or may be developing, carpal tunnel syndrome.
