BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston's new professional women's soccer team, Boston Legacy FC, was honored at the State House on Wednesday ahead of its opening game this weekend.

Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, joined by members of the Massachusetts Women's Caucus, introduced the players to the cheering crowd, many decked out in Legacy's green team colors.

Driscoll said the return of professional women's soccer to the region adds to the already rich history of professional sports in Boston. "Massachusetts fans, we know how to show up!" she exclaimed. "And you all are playing your first game on Saturday against New York Gotham (crowd boos and jeers). Know that you will have the whole commonwealth right here to cheer you on!"

State Rep. Danielle Gregoire wore a custom sequined Legacy jersey.

She said it was special that the team was being honored during Women's History Month. "They are women making history in the place that invented America and where the first shots of the revolution, both the war, and the football team, were fired."

Boston Legacy FC is playing Gotham FC Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, starting at 12:30 p.m.

The game will be televised on ABC.

The New Kids on the Block will perform during halftime.
