Colbie Caillat teamed up with country star Lee Brice on “a heartfelt anthem about the complicated space between moving on and holding on.”
Caillat, and Brice wrote “Kinda Single” with producers Eric Arjes and Jimmy Robbins. The group wrote the duet “with raw honesty,” and delivered a song that “explores the tug-of-war of a love that refuses to fully let go,” reads a press release issued Friday (August 29). Caillat released “Kinda Single” and premiered the Brenton Giesey-directed music video, which was filmede in the Blueprint Cocktail Club in Nashville, Tennessee.
“I’d set anything on fire/ To burn a path back to you/ We keep makin me a liar/ Yea I can’t change the truth/ The door that we ain’t closin/ Tends to let a bit a us back through/ Guess I’m always kinda single/ Long as you’re kinda single too”
“I’ve wanted to do a song with Lee for so many years - he has one of my favorite voices, with such unique inflections and heart in everything he sings,” Caillat said in a statement. “Writing this together with him and the guys was so much fun - we even nicknamed ourselves ‘zest and pep’; I’m the lemon zest and he’s the pepper. ‘Kinda Single,’ is about that space between moving on and holding on, when no matter how hard you try to close the door, part of you keeps drifting back. It’s messy, honest, and real, because sometimes love doesn’t fit neatly into all-or-nothing.”
Caillat added in a caption on Instagram: “Thank you, Lee and Jimmy for talking about my love life before I arrived to the session and coming up with this song idea. And thank you to everyone on both mine and Lee‘s teams for making one of my dreams come true getting to release a song with the amazing Lee Brice. He is a true artist, a true vocalist and a true down to earth gentlemen.”
“Kinda Single” is the latest song to release from Caillat’s upcoming 12-track album, This Time Around. The record blends new original music with reimagined versions of Caillat’s career-spanning hits. Other artists featured with Caillat include Maddie & Tae, Mitchell Tenpenny, Ryan Hurd, Russell Dickerson and more. This Time Around is due on September 26. Watch the “Kinda Single” music video here:
