EVERETT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — After years of deliberation and legislative effort, the first sports bets in Massachusetts go live at 10 a.m. 32 specially-selected guests will place the first sports bets at the Encore Boston Harbor in Everett right as betting comes online.

Half an hour later, well-known figures in the Boston sports world including former Patriots Ty Law and Matt Light and political movers like State House Speaker Ronald Mariano will place bets at WynnBET's Sportsbook window. Former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is expected to make an appearance at 6:00 p.m.

There are two other casinos hosting sports-betting kickoff bashes, including MGM Springfield at 10:00 a.m. and Plainridge Park in Plainview at 1:00 p.m.

Bets are only allowed for people ages 21 and up, and must be made in cash. Betting will be accepted on dozens of sports, including big leagues like football and baseball, and more obscure sports like water polo and beach soccer.

Sports betting on mobile apps and online is expected sometime in March.
