Watch Saugus Grandpa Make "Extra Special Delivery" By Drone

SAUGUS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Staying physically far apart can be difficult for many families, especially around special occasions. Officials say it appears social distancing measures are helping to gradually flatten the curve in Massachusetts, and on Friday Mayor Marty Walsh urged people to continue staying apart, even during Mother's Day.

Thanks to modern technology, people have been able to get inventive with how they connect in isolation. That includes a grandfather in Saugus, who found a creative way to deliver donuts to his grandkids in quarantine at their home 1/3 of a mile away.

According to Dunkin', after a month of being separated from his three grandsons, Kevin Procopio decided to attach a box of Munchkins to his drone and air-drop it to their back deck. Thanks to the drone's camera, he even got to watch their reaction live.

It's not the first time Procopio has used his drone to send things to people nearby. Dunkin' says he's "known by his family for airdropping packages via drone," but around Easter, "Procopio decided to make an extra special delivery... to his grandkids, making their day a little brighter."

While Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced there will be no festivals or parades allowed in the city until at least September 7 due to coronavirus, he is urging local event organizers to find similar creative ways to continue connecting with their communities in lockdown.

"We're a city that is diverse, creative, compassionate, and resilient," Walsh said on Friday. "And those are the qualities we need now to stay strong and get through this challenge."
