National Grid Employees To Live At Work During Quarantine

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — National Grid is now set up to have about 200 employees live at work.

Phil Lavallee is the director of the New England Transmission control room. He is one of the currently sequestered employees. He told WBZ NewsRadio's Jim MacKay that this plan was in the works for a while now.

"We just felt that it was necessary to secure a healthy workforce in an environment where we could sustain that ability, to keep the power on for people," Lavallee said.

National Grid made sure to provide amenities as well, as the employees man three different control centers, which include two electric control centers and one gas control center.

"Housing, we brought in a food service, we brought in laundry trailers, we brought in shower trailers," Lavallee said.

Another group of employees, quarantined at home, will fill in when the first group needs a break.

"We have half of our folks in here being sequestered right now for a period of 30 days," Lavallee said. "That's the plan, we're going to rotate out on April 24, with what we are calling 'Wave A.'"

The plan is to continue cycling groups in and out until the quarantine is over.
