LAWRENCE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A man who was being robbed at gunpoint on a street in Lawrence, when a police officer stepped in, said the suspect was trying to steal his phone.
The incident happened on Saturday around 2:40 p.m. A Lawrence police sergeant witnessed an armed suspect attempting to rob a homeless man in a wheelchair in the area of Broadway and Haverhill Streets. According to police, the officer fired his weapon, but the suspect was not injured. He was taken into custody without incident.
The incident was caught on surveillance camera.
After the suspect was arrested, the victim spoke to a witness, who then posted a video of his comments to social media.
The victim said the police officer who stopped the robbery-in-action was driving past as it happened. "The cop was at the light going through, he saw the whole thing," the victim said. "He saw him draw his gun, go for my phone, everything."
"He knew he had a gun, so he put him down, he tried to get him down but the guy wouldn't.... So the cop fired," the victim said. "And he missed him! So close."
The victim, who did not wish to be identified, said he knew what the suspect was trying to get from him.
"He tried to steal my phone, I'm in a f***ing wheelchair! He tried to steal my phone!"

The suspect will be arraigned Tuesday in Lawrence District Court. The exact charges are not yet clear.
An investigation is ongoing.
