Mayor Walsh Responds To Boston Globe Racism Spotlight Series

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- On NightSide with Dan Rea Wednesday night, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh responded to a Boston Globe Spotlight series exploring racism in Boston.

Walsh said he's waiting to see the next few days of the Globe piece, but said he's been talking about the same issues the paper brings up as the city's chief executive.

"I've been talking about them for the last four years as mayor, part of our race dialogues and part of the inequality we have in the city of Boston as far as jobs and education and housing opportunities and salary," he said. "Some of those numbers that were in the paper, we've talked about them, and I've talked about them for the last four years."

He said it's important to acknowledge the city's shortcomings and work on them--but Boston, he said, has some positives to talk about as well.

Walsh mentioned  the Boston Red Sox being the last team to have a black player, but pointed out that other Boston teams were more open.

"The Celtics ... one of the first teams, I think, to put all five black players on the floor, first black coach," he said. "The Boston Bruins. First to ever have a black player. So I think all of that has to be acknowledged, with the bad has to be some good acknowledgement."

Citing places like Alabama, the mayor said these issues are elsewhere, too--and said it's one thing to bring these issues to light and another to take action, which is the next step.
